Trip hightlights

Quirky Pit Stop

The most unexpected place for Vermont’s best donuts! This little barn store is sure to charm you and have you coming back for more!

Hiking Mount Pisgah

This climb leads to some of the most breathtaking views in Vermont. Something about the deep blue lake and tall cliffs…

Cooling off in the Lake

As a glacial lake formed 10,000 years ago, Lake Willoughby is one of the deepest lakes in New England and the water is crystal clear.

What to pack for the day

For the road trip:

  • money for gas and food (make sure to bring cash for a fun stop at Red Sky Trading Co.)
  • good music & good company!

To hike Mount Pisgah:

  • hiking shoes, light & comfy clothes
  • snacks, lots of water
  • sunscreen & bugspray
  • CBD tincture (we took a dropper full before starting our hike, and one at the top! The CBD helped reduce inflammation so we didn’t feel any soreness post-workout!)
  • Some paper towel in case nature calls

For the perfect beach day:

  • swim suit
  • beach towel
  • CBD vape pen
  • A change of clothes (optional)

Step 1: The Road Trip

Our Starting point: Winooski, VT

Destination: Lake Willoughby (3162-5646 VT-5A, Orleans, VT 05860 are the specific coordinates!)

Driving Time: About 2 hours

You’ve set the destination on your GPS but you MUST make sure it gives you the best route! We recommend starting on Highway 89 South bound, and exiting at the Waterbury exit. If you drive through Stowe, your GPS should automatically take you through Morrisville, Hardwick, Greensboro Bend, Glover (home to a hidden gem; Red Sky Trading Co.!), Barton and finally to the beautiful Lake Willoughby.

Quick Pit Stop: Red Sky Trading Co.

We made a stop in Hardwick to fill up on gas, but waited to get snacks somewhere very special… Believe me, it’s worth it. Red Sky Trading Co. is located in the remote town of Glover. It’s a little barn store where you can find goodies like cake, donuts, muffins, cookies, cold natural drinks, local bread, fresh fruits, cheeses and more! There is no one in this store, just a little receipt book where you can enter what you bough and a jar for cash! The trust adds to the charm, make sure you bring your change if you ever go because you don’t want to miss out on this magical experience.

Their hours are 9am to 6pm Friday-Sunday.

Step 2: The hike

Starting point: Mount Pisgah Western Trailhead (3162-5646 VT-5A, Orleans, VT 05860 are the specific coordinates!)

Destination: Mount Pisgah summit! (however the best views are on the scenic lookouts right before the summit)

Lenght: 4.6miles (About 1.5 hour hike up and 1hour hike down.)

It is very easy to spot where the trail starts. There is typically a long line of cars parked on the side of the road!

On our hike up we were blessed with a very cute energetic dog named Penny who ran past us nearly a dozen times! Of course we saw her on the top too, and got some awesome pictures. Really stole the show…<3

CBD Tip: Take a dropper of our potent CBD tincture before you start your hike, and one when you reach the top! The benefits are great especially with challenging physical activity like hiking up a moutain. The CBD reduces inflamation in your muscle groups allowing faster repair and you will feel almost none of that post-hike soreness!

Hungry after your hike?

Hit up this sweet pub! The Gap Pub and Grill is a short drive back to the North end of the lake, and has delicious poutine! Emma lived in Quebec for many years, and this poutine makes the cut as far as traditional flavor and style goes: she highly recommends! We also got a wrap and some chicken wings.

Step 3: Relax and enjoy the lake!

Really at this point, you make the rules. By now you’ve driven past North Beach and have seen how crowded it can get! We didn’t stop there for there are many places along the lake that are more secluded with better views. There is also a clothing-optional beach on the South end for the daring folks! Keep in mind that the lake is deep, and swimming along the edges like we did is at your own risk! If you are worried about safety, North Beach might be a good option for you.

We stopped by the charming liquor store on our way for some beers and stumbled onto an icecream stand! We didn’t try it because we were full from lunch, and instead opted of this blue raspberry frozen cocktail we found! It was delicious, and very refreshing.

We drove along the lake and parked along the side of a pretty spot. We were able to walk down to the water, and find ourselves a nice secluded spot to chill, vape some CBD, and go swimming! It was a beautiful way to enjoy the sun and relax after our long hike.

South End of the lake

Locally known as the nude beach, Lake Willoughby’s South End is known for it’s clear waters and stunning views! Of course we had to check it out.

Just as described, the view from this end was stunning. We also happened to visit on a VERY crowded day, and saw lots of naked people playing water frisbee and enjoying ALL the sun! It was a very fun and free atmosphere. We stayed for a little bit, vaped some CBD and had fun doing a little photoshoot!

And then it was time to head home! Sun soaked, spent and happy. This is definitely an adventure for the books. If you have a day to make it happen, DO IT! You will have no regrets. Just make sure the weather is good to spend time outside! If you do end up going, and it’s inspired from this blog we would love it if you tagged us on Instagram @bterps.co so we can feature you!

So long fellow adventurers! Till next time.
